. that was the deal before hurricane sandy. i'm sorry to tell you these trusty tracks with the families and the surfers and the commuting pigeons, they got washed out last month by hurricane sandy. the storm surge swamped the tracks and twisted them and they are not expected to get fixed for many, many long months, which means tens of thousands of people are logistically stuck out there in the rockaways. lots of them still without power and heat. the rockaways are not an island, but for people out there, that's how life is being lived right now. after the storm, the rockaways got so hard to reach, some bicyclists pedals in supplies, partly because with gas supplies short, biking still worked. believe it or not, the u.s. navy made an amphibious landing a couple weeks ago because that was the best way to bring in equipment. just pull up to the beach and o go. today we got some news. the folks that run the subway system just posted this video. look at that. the city has trucked in 20 subway cars for the rockaway side of the busted tracks. they did this four nights running, bringing in the

[bleep]. it would be a shame if you lost power. but here is the thing about the conditions. it's much worse than you probably understand even from the vivid and horrific nature of the images you've seen. the destruction and devastation. the crazy part some of the hardest hit area are places heavily populated with our first responders. firefighters, police, sanitation, e.m.t.s, all live very heavily in these areas. people we rely on when we are in trouble. the dedication of rescue workers, volunteers has been phenomenal but there's still huge needs for hands-on help out there. we work with a particularly great group. statten island strong. they're being funded by the foundation that is out in statten island. you can donate. needs are constantly changing. so the best thing you can do honestly is show up in person with a crowbar. or help out and send money. although if

and other supplies thanks to super-storm sandy in the northeast. shares jumped to a new 52 week high. volume more than doubled with the stock up 6.2%. one tax set to go up in january is the tax on stock dividends. wal-mart today had an early gift for itshareholder it moved up the payment of its fourth quarter dividend. walmart will pay out $39.75 per share on december 27. it had been scheduled to go out january second. under current law the tax on common dividends could go from 15% to as high as 43% for some shareholders. shares were up 1.5% on heavier than usual volume. j.p. morgan gained 2.8% before announcing a new chief financial officer late today. marianne lake currently is the chief financial officer at the bank's conser busins. the management shake-up comes after the bank's $6 billion derivatives trading loss this spring. just ahead of thanksgiving, the country's biggest meat producer tyson foods saw the impact of this summer's midwestern drought. dry conditions led to higher animal feed costs, leading to less meat supply, helping tyson raise prices. bottom line for the quarter: $.55
